Amateur radio operators using APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) have a new tool to enhance their message reliability and convenience: APRS.Chat. Created by the team behind Signals Everywhere, APRS.Chat offers a persistent, web-based mailbox for your APRS callsign—ensuring you never miss a message, even if your radio is offline or out of range.
Traditionally, APRS messages required the recipient’s station to be active and listening when the message was transmitted. If the radio was turned off, or temporarily disconnected from APRS-IS (the internet-based APRS backbone), the message would often be lost. APRS.Chat solves this problem by acting as a “store-and-forward” gateway, capturing and logging all APRS messages addressed to your callsign (and its various SSIDs) in real time.
Once registered, users can access their personalized message history through the APRS.Chat website. The interface is simple, intuitive, and designed with both desktop and mobile users in mind. This functionality is especially useful for mobile operators, emergency responders, and hobbyists in remote areas where APRS coverage is spotty. Whether you’re operating on HF, VHF, or via an internet bridge, your messages will be captured and stored in one place.
The platform does not require any special configuration on your radio or APRS software—just send a standard APRS message as usual, and it will be logged if it passes through APRS-IS. Future plans include support for sending replies directly from the website, integration with mobile apps, and advanced search and filtering options.
An Android app is also in development, with early access available for supporters of the Signals Everywhere Patreon campaign. This move aims to bring even greater accessibility and push notifications to users who want real-time updates without relying solely on RF.
As digital innovation continues to support legacy radio systems, APRS.Chat stands out as a forward-thinking bridge between amateur radio tradition and modern web technology. For operators who value message integrity and convenience, this service is quickly becoming an essential companion to their APRS toolkit.
