Build a Tiny FM Transmitter: Minimal Parts, Maximum Fun!
This Tiny FM Transmitter is a great example of how powerful a simple circuit can be. With just a handful of components, you can transmit audio signals over FM frequencies. Whether you’re an electronics hobbyist or a beginner experimenting with RF circuits, this project is an easy and exciting place to start.

Tiny FM Transmitter – Circuit Overview
At the heart of the circuit is a general-purpose 2N3904 NPN transistor, configured as a high-frequency oscillator. It takes audio input from an electret microphone (MIC) and modulates it onto an FM carrier.
Here’s a breakdown of the key components:
- Q1 (2N3904): Main oscillator transistor
- R1, R3 (10kΩ): Bias resistors
- R2 (270Ω): Emitter resistor
- C1 (0.1µF): Audio coupling capacitor
- C2, C3 (10pF): Feedback and tuning capacitors
- L1: The coil, which determines the frequency of transmission
- Antenna: Simple wire antenna for signal transmission
Coil (L1) Specifications
The inductor L1 is critical in setting the transmitter’s frequency. For this build:
- Turns: 6 turns
- Diameter: 6 mm (air core)
- Wire: 24 SWG enameled copper wire
- Type: Air-core, tightly wound
- Winding Tip: Use a pencil or drill bit as a winding form. Remove it after winding to retain the shape.
This coil will typically allow operation in the 88–108 MHz FM band, depending on spacing and component tolerances.
Antenna Suggestions
For a compact and efficient antenna:
- Simple Wire Antenna: Use a 20–30 cm length of solid-core wire.
- Telescopic Antenna: If range is a concern, a small telescopic antenna can improve performance.
- Avoid Long Wires Indoors: Too long an antenna can pick up noise or create instability.
This tiny transmitter can reach a range of 30 to 100 meters in open space depending on the antenna and power supply.
Note on Legality
Please remember that transmitting on FM frequencies may be regulated in your country. Always operate low-power transmitters responsibly and within legal limits.
